These carbon grades have sulfur that helps them easily machined. 1045, on the other hand, have higher carbon amount but no additional elements. This makes it a bad choice if machining is needed.

Determining the strength requirements

Keep in mind that low carbon steel lacks tensile strengths compared to other carbon steels. If the application needs high strengths, low carbon steel should be avoided. With this, it is better to choose carbon steel with higher carbon content like 1045 as it can provide more hardness and strength. However, you should remember that low carbon alternative is designed having higher strengths while keeping its formability.

Choosing good corrosion resistance

Carbon steels are not famous for its ability to resist corrosion. Carbon steel is mostly made of iron, which can oxidise and form rust. Without the right corrosion-resistant elements added, nothing will keep it from oxidising. You should consider a galvanised or plated carbon steel if you want to prevent rusting.

Alternatively, you can also consider bluing, which is a technique that will immerse the steel into a water, potassium and sodium hydroxide solution. The most cost-effective way to protect parts against rust is through organic painting. Paints will make a barrier that can keep the corrosive elements against the carbon steel part. It effectively prevents the penetration of oxygen and water.

To help you choose the right grade for your project, you should know the common applications of different grades. Grades 1008, 1010 and 1018 are used in machinery parts, mounting, brackets and tie rods. Grades 1141 and 1144 are used in pins, studs, shafts, and bolts. Grade 1045 can be used in gears, bolts, shafts, die forges and many applications where more strength and hardness are required.
